  1. Newspaper Ads
  2. Billboards
  3. TV
  4. Radio
  5. Magazine Ads
  6. Google

If you answered number 6 then you must be someone who seriously wants to grow your business and you realise that the Internet is the future, and that Google is the number 1 search engine that is not going anywhere anytime soon.

What is the biggest difference between google and all these other forms of advertising?

The difference is that Google and why Google is king is that when someone is searching on Google, they are a RED HOT lead that is searching, finding, and calling YOU!

They have already taken an action and are much closer to becoming a client/customer than someone that you “interrupt” with your advertising.

Google has the most high quality leads because someone in going to Google and typing in a search for your specific service.

If you’re in a Lawyer in Melbourne for example, and someone is typing in Google “Family Lawyer in Melbourne”, that is a RED HOT lead. It doesn’t get any hotter than then when they find you at the top of Google.

So how do you get to the top?

Well there is SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) which is a great LONG-TERM investment for a business but number 1 in 24 hours is pretty much impossible for a high quality keyword and there is no guarantee that you will get to number 1 of Google organic search results especially when competing with other businesses who have being doing SEO on those keywords for years.

There is only one way to generate High Quality leads in a short time and be at the top of Google for hundreds of keywords and that of course is Google Adwords which gives businesses including small local businesses a huge advantage.

When I talk about Google advertising I am talking about specifically using Google Adwords Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising and not SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). A lot of business owners in particular, don’t know the difference between SEO and PPC. Although many have heard of the term SEO, not many are familiar with what PPC is.

PPC is Pay Per Click. It’s just one of many online advertising models and to keep things a simple as possible it is the only model I will discuss in this book. PPC advertising is available on Google through Google AdWords and also on Facebook, Bing and many other places. Pay Per Click is very simple, when someone clicks on your ad you get charged.

With Pay Per Click advertising on Google, you can be at the top of page one for hundreds or even thousands of different keywords as soon as your campaign goes live within 24 hours.

So if you have a landing page done already, you could set up the Google campaign today and it will probably be approved by tomorrow at which time your campaign is live. Almost immediately you’ll have people clicking on your ad, going to your landing page and you’ll be getting leads and clients right away. You can bid on any keyword that you want in Google and you can bid on hundreds of keywords!

Note that I mentioned “landing page” rather than “website”. Yes you can point your keyword targeted Google ad to your website but it’s much better and much more optimal to point it to a specifically designed landing page.

Now SEO is a process that can take many months to see results especially for competitive keywords. Be wary of anyone who says they can get you to the top of Google page one in a month or two using SEO methods. Although it is possible for non-competitive keywords that will hardly get you any traffic, it is highly unlikely to occur for the keywords that matter.

For example, if you are a Dentist in Melbourne CBD on Russell Street then you probably could get to the top of page one of the organic search results in as little as a month for the long-tail keyword phrase “Dentist on Russell Street Melbourne”. How many people do you think are searching for this keyword phrase? Next to no one is my guess. For a good competitive keyword, like “Melbourne Dentist”, it could take a long time to get onto page one, let alone the top of page one.

“One of the unintended negative consequences of online advertising has been the loss of value in traditional classifieds. It's simply quicker, simply easier for an end user who's online, on a broadband connection, to look things up and to figure out what they want to buy.”

Eric Schmidt – Executive chairman of Google.

A word of caution, if it is not done right by someone who knows what they are doing, PPC advertising could cost you a lot of money for very little return. But done right, it is a great way to get high quality leads and clients fast. Another thing is that you can't SEO 100 different keywords. When you do SEO you get to choose your top few keywords and whoever is doing a search engine optimisation is going to focus only those top few keywords.

So something to consider is before you do an SEO campaign is to actually run a Google Adwords campaign first and see what your top performing keywords are and then SEO those top keywords. Google analytics can also be used to monitor and measure the success of your campaigns so you will easily be able to get statistics which tell you which keywords are getting clicks and which keywords are converting into leads and clients.

Now another great advantage of Google Adwords PPC advertising is that you can pause and un-pause your campaign anytime you want and only schedule campaigns to run on the days that you want. So if you only want to show your ads from 8 AM to 6 PM when there's someone in their office to answer the phones, then you can schedule it to run Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 6 PM which means they'll never be getting clicks at a bad time. You can also have them appear in certain countries and cities and being a local business you would definitely want to have them appear locally only.

Depending on the type of business you have, just running Google Adwords may be all you need. For example, if you have a plumbing business and all you do is emergency work then anyone who is looking for an emergency plumber needs a help immediately. They haven’t got time or interest in reading your blog entries or get a special report from you on the top 10 plumbing scams to watch out for. So why go to all that effort. You get my drift?

Hopefully you’re starting to see the power of PPC advertising here to get your business on the top of Google search results. Once you have your campaigns working and optimised in Google and getting you leads, you can then do the same with Bing’s advertising platform and also Facebook to get even a bigger reach to a wider audience resulting in more clicks that get you clients.
